Whether you’re new to model building or an old hand, we have a kit to delight and entertain you. Model kits make great presents – not just because they look great when they’re finished but because they offer the recipient hours of enjoyment, the ability to learn new skills and the sense of achievement when the model’s complete.

In 1938 the U.S. Bureau of Aeronautics issued a specification to manufacturers for a carrier-based fighter bomber.

Chance Vought successfully answered this request with a proposal for an aircraft fitted with the biggest, most powerful, air-cooled engine of the day – the hugely powerful Pratt and Whitney 18-cylinder Double Wasp.

The engine required a very large diameter propeller to use the 1850 horsepower available, which gave the Vought engineers a headache as it required an equally large clearance to the ground. The simple answer of a tall undercarriage would be unacceptable due to the harsh landing loads expected for a carrier based aircraft.

To overcome this problem, the design team lead by Rex Beisel came up with a “bent” inverted gull wing design. The inboard section of the wing having a severe anhedral angle and outboard section a severe dihedral angle with the undercarriage positioned at the joint of the two.

As well as being structurally sound the distinctive configuration had the advantage of minimising drag at the wing root to fuselage joint.

With a wingspan of 18″(450mm) your finished model will be big enough to handle with ease and yet small enough to display with pride in your living room. Perhaps you remember building one of the original kits as a youngster, cutting out the fiddly printed wood parts with a scalpel?

We’ve made building the kit easier for you – the precision laser-cut balsa parts simply push out ready for you to stick together using readily available PVA wood glue. We’ve included an original plan and instructions along with lightweight japanese tissue, propeller, rubber motor and wheels – in fact everything you’ll need to create a fully flyable recreation of this iconic aircraft.

So much more fun than a plastic “Airfix” kit, enjoy time together with your son or daughter developing engineering skills they’ll value forever and creating memories they’ll treasure for a lifetime. These kits make great Christmas gifts and birthday presents for that “hard to buy for” man who has everything (please note children under 14 should be supervised by an adult).
